Prisoner bludgeoned to death inside Yerwada Jail

Pune: A 43-year-old convict was killed by another convict at the Yerwada Central Jail on Saturday afternoon. 

The police have identified the deceased as Sukhdev Meghraj Mahapur. He was lodged in the jail for the past seven months for undergoing sentence in a kidnapping case. The accused Dinesh Dabde (35) is serving life imprisonment in a murder case.

According to prison officials, both of them were working in the jail kitchen. Around 12.30 pm, there was some argument between them. Later, Dabde hit Sukhdev with a stone on head from behind. After being informed, Yerwada police station officials arrested Dabde. 

Additional Director General of Police BK Upadhyay, who is the head of Pune-headquartered prisons department, said, “Two prisoners were working in kitchen. One of them was sitting in his barrack, when another one attacked with stone resulting in death. Yerwada police station officials are investigating the case.”
