Pune, 18 February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed a 5% increase in property tax for the financial year 2026–27 and placed the proposal before the General Body. All eyes are now on the first General Body meeting scheduled for February 18 to see whether the ruling BJP will reject the hike or approve it.

Earlier, the civic administration had proposed a 10% tax increase before the Standing Committee. The move triggered sharp criticism from various organisations and citizens, who argued that Pune already levies one of the highest property taxes compared to other cities.

They also pointed out that nearly ₹4,000 crore in property tax dues remain unpaid and that several properties are still outside the tax net. Critics said the administration should focus on recovering pending dues instead of burdening taxpayers.

Following the backlash, the Standing Committee reduced the proposed hike to 5%. The revised proposal includes a 3% increase in general tax and a 2% increase in road tax. The matter will now be discussed in the General Body meeting to be held at 3 pm on Wednesday, the first such meeting after the municipal elections.

According to BJP corporators, a meeting was held at the civic headquarters on February 17, where it was decided that the party would not support the property tax increase. A corporator said, “We have decided to reject the proposal for property tax hike.”
