Pune, 13th July 2026: Although the ₹24-crore redevelopment of Pune Airport's old terminal has been completed, passengers may have to wait a few more months before it opens. The terminal is awaiting mandatory approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which has not yet carried out its final inspection.
Before any airport terminal becomes operational, BCAS must inspect the premises to ensure all security systems meet aviation safety standards. If the agency identifies any shortcomings, airport authorities must address them before receiving a No Objection Certificate (NOC).
According to airport officials, the inspection of the redeveloped terminal has not yet been scheduled. As a result, the terminal's opening is expected to be delayed by another two to three months.
"The redevelopment work on Pune Airport's old terminal has been completed, and all required security equipment has been installed. However, BCAS has not yet carried out its inspection. If any observations are made during the inspection, they will be addressed. If there are no observations, the old terminal will be opened immediately after BCAS grants its approval," said Santosh Dhoke, Director, Pune Airport.
The old terminal was closed on March 5, 2025, for redevelopment. Authorities had initially expected the project to be completed within eight months. However, despite the work now being finished, the terminal has remained closed for nearly one and a half years due to pending operational clearances.
One of the key features of the redevelopment is the seamless integration of the old and new terminals. Their security hold areas have been connected, allowing passengers to move between both terminals without inconvenience.
The expanded waiting area can now accommodate around 500 passengers at a time, significantly improving passenger comfort during peak hours.
The renovated terminal also includes several infrastructure upgrades. The previous exit gate has been converted into an entry gate, while four X-ray baggage screening machines and two boarding gates have been installed to improve passenger processing and operational efficiency.
