Pune: Anil Deshmukh backs top cop who gave Wadhwans e-pass amid lockdown

Pune: Terming as it was a ‘mistake’ on part of the newly appointed Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta to grant e-pass to the Wadhawan brothers amid the lockdown, Home Minister of the state Anil Deshmukh defended the appointment stating Amitabh Gupta had a good track record and that he was a respectful officer.

The Home Minister was interacting mediapersons after his visit to the Pune Union of Working Journalists on Sunday.

When asked about IPS Gupta appointed as Pune city police chief Minister Deshmukh said, "Gupta had made a mistake. He was prosecuted and transferred for that act. His work is good and he is a dutiful officer. I have seen his work and also the way he held accountable. He has now been given the responsibility as Pune Police Commissioner.” Amitabh Gupta assumed charge as Pune Police Commissioner on Sunday. Outgoing Pune Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham has been transferred to Mumbai as Additional Director General of Police (Special Operations).

Police in the state have been on high alert for the past six months amid the COVID-19 situation.

Deshmukh informed, “The work of the police in the Maharashtra state is very good. The families of the deceased policemen will be given Rs 65 lakh as financial assistance.
