Pune, 20 April 2026: Traffic rule violations will soon be penalized automatically as police prepare to roll out an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). Additional Commissioner of Pune Police Manoj Patil said that the system will detect violations and directly issue e-challans without manual intervention.
Speaking at a city-based social impact dialogue, Patil explained that this move aims to discipline reckless driving and improve overall traffic management. The system will rely on advanced surveillance and data integration to ensure real-time enforcement.
Pune’s traffic challenges have intensified with the number of private vehicles crossing 7.8 million. In contrast, only about 11% of residents rely on public transport. This imbalance has led to frequent congestion and increasing pressure on road infrastructure.
To tackle this, authorities are working with mapping and technology platforms to ease traffic flow across 32 major roads. Officials also stressed that long-term relief depends on citizens shifting towards public transport.
Authorities expect that Pune’s metro network will expand to nearly 120 kilometers over the next five years, offering a viable alternative to private vehicles. However, officials emphasized that infrastructure alone cannot solve the problem.
Speakers at the event urged corporate organizations to contribute through CSR initiatives, particularly in areas like traffic management, environmental sustainability, and urban mobility solutions.
With technology-driven enforcement, expanding public transport, and growing awareness, Pune is attempting to address its traffic crisis. However, real change will depend on a combination of strict policing and responsible behavior from citizens.
