Pune: Dumping of Biomedical Waste Near Paud Raises Health Concerns

Pune: Hazardous medical waste found along roadside near Karmoli bridge sparks fear; Residents demand immediate cleanup and strict action

TBC Desk

Pune, 27 April 2026: A shocking case of biomedical waste dumping has surfaced near Karmoli bridge along the Paud–Kolvan road, alarming local residents. A large heap of medical waste, including used syringes, needles, medicine bottles, and other discarded materials, was found lying openly on the roadside.

The waste appears to have been dumped carelessly, without following any safety protocols. As per rules, biomedical waste must be handled and disposed of in a controlled manner, but the incident highlights serious negligence by those responsible.

The presence of used needles and syringes significantly increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases. People living nearby fear accidental injuries and exposure, especially since the waste is easily accessible from the road.

The situation is particularly dangerous due to the movement of stray animals and schoolchildren in the area. Children walking along the road and animals scavenging through the waste could come into direct contact with hazardous materials.

Medical waste exposure can lead to infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV through contaminated sharps and fluids. It can also cause injuries, poisoning, and contribute to environmental damage by contaminating soil and water.

Local residents have expressed strong anger over the incident and are demanding strict action against those responsible. They have also urged authorities to immediately clear the waste and ensure proper disposal systems are followed to prevent such incidents in the future.
