Pune, 23 March 2026: A major breach in a canal behind Magarpatta city in Ghorpadi has led to a flood-like situation in Pune, causing panic among residents and disrupting normal life in the area.
Large volumes of water gushed out of the canal and spilled onto nearby roads, eventually entering parts of Magarpatta and nearby localities.
The situation worsened as water also flooded several companies in the Hadapsar industrial estate and reached residential settlements in Jahanagir Nagar. Residents in these areas reported fear and chaos as water levels rose rapidly.
The breach is suspected to have been caused by ongoing pipeline work along Magarpatta Road, which may have weakened the canal wall. Locals had earlier noticed minor leakages from the canal over the past few days, which eventually escalated into a major rupture.
The sudden inflow of water has severely impacted traffic movement in the area. One side of the road has been shut, leading to congestion stretching up to nearly two kilometres, with long queues of vehicles reported.
A large number of people gathered near the spot to witness the situation, raising concerns about safety. The strong water flow has made the area risky, especially for children and motorists, increasing the chances of accidents.
“Pipeline work may have weakened the canal wall, leading to this incident. The water in the canal has now been completely stopped, and repair work will be taken up immediately once the water level recedes,” said Mohan Bhadane, officer, irrigation department.
