Mumbai/Pune, 26 June 2025: A high-level review meeting chaired by Minister of State for Home Shri Yogesh Kadam was held in Mumbai to assess the state of CCTV surveillance in Pune. The meeting was convened following a ‘calling attention’ motion raised during the 2025 Budget Session by MLA Siddharth Shirole, highlighting the alarming number of non-functional CCTV units across the city.

MLA Shirole expressed concern over the absence of a policy-driven framework for the maintenance and management of CCTV infrastructure. “Many cameras go offline within a year of installation due to undefined accountability,” he said, calling it a serious lapse in the city’s urban safety net.

He further recommended that CCTV cabling be installed underground to prevent damage and tampering, ensuring long-term operational reliability.

Responding to these concerns, Minister Kadam announced that a secretary-level coordination committee will be formed to bring all relevant agencies together and draft a unified policy for robust and sustainable urban surveillance.

Principal Secretary (Home) Shri Anup Kumar Singh and senior officials from the Home and Urban Development departments also attended the meeting.

“Modern surveillance requires not just technology, but accountability and long-term planning. Pune’s safety deserves nothing less,” said Shirole.prop

In March Pune Police proposed installation of 1200 CCTV cameras in the city to enhance security and manage traffic congestion more efficiently. They were planned to be linked with the city’s existing surveillance system to create an integrated network.
