Pune, 28th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to initiate legal action against nearly 800 employees for failing to participate in the ongoing census work, which has been progressing at a slow pace across several parts of the city.
According to civic officials, census operations in regional offices such as Nagar Road, Yerawada-Wagholi, Dhole Patil Road, Aundh-Baner and Sinhagad Road have failed to achieve even 50 percent completion. Despite repeated instructions, review meetings and official orders, many enumerators and supervisors have remained absent from duty.
PMC administration has now decided to take a strict stand against employees neglecting census responsibilities. Officials said complaints are being prepared for submission to police stations under Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948. Employees who continue to remain absent despite receiving a final opportunity may face criminal cases.
The civic body had appointed staff members from various government departments for census-related work. However, frequent absenteeism has severely affected the progress of the exercise, prompting authorities to consider legal measures.
“Census work is a national responsibility and negligence in carrying out this duty will not be tolerated,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Divte.
Among all regional offices, the Sinhagad Road office has adopted the most aggressive approach. The office had identified 1,174 census groups and appointed 1,174 enumerators along with 192 supervisors for the task. However, many employees reportedly failed to report for duty despite official orders.
“Delays and negligence in census work will not be accepted. The process of filing cases against employees remaining absent without valid reasons has already begun,” said Assistant Commissioner Vijaykumar Waghmode.
