Pune, 25 December 2025: City is experiencing an unusually cold December this year, with the city witnessing a sharp rise in cold mornings and chilly nights. According to weather data, December 2025 has broken all records of the past decade, emerging as the coldest December since 2014.
In just the first 25 days of the month, Pune recorded 15 days with single-digit minimum temperatures, a figure not seen in the last ten years. On December 25, the mercury dipped to 9.8°C, marking yet another single-digit morning.
Additionally, Pune’s Shivajinagar area reported a maximum temperature of 27.5°C on December 24, the lowest daytime temperature recorded this December so far.
Explaining the reasons behind the sharp drop in temperatures, Indian Meteorological Department Pune scientist Dr. S. D. Sanap said that the humidity levels in Pune’s atmosphere have fallen significantly. Cold and dry winds blowing from the northern regions, combined with clear skies throughout the day, are intensifying the cold.
Due to the absence of cloud cover, heat escapes rapidly at night, leading to a steep fall in early morning temperatures.
A look at data from previous years shows that while December 2016 had earlier recorded a high of 12 single-digit days, the current month has already surpassed that mark.
In 2018, Pune recorded its lowest minimum temperature of the decade at 5.9°C, but the number of cold days that year was lower than in 2025. Last year, in 2024, only five days saw single-digit minimum temperatures.
With more cold nights expected in the coming days, meteorologists say December 2025 is likely to go down as one of the coldest Decembers Pune has experienced in recent history, prompting residents to brace for an extended spell of winter chill.
