Pune, 31 March 2026: Concerns over worker safety at construction sites in Pune have resurfaced after a tragic incident in the Baner area, where a labourer lost his life while on duty. The accident occurred on the afternoon of March 28 at an ongoing construction site.
The deceased has been identified as Karim Chamatkar Shaikh (35). Following the incident, a case of negligence has been registered against the concerned company officials under relevant sections. The complaint was filed by Rabiul Rahid Shaikh (32), a resident of Bavdhan and the victim’s relative.
According to the complaint, Karim was working on shuttering and concrete tasks at the site. During the removal of iron mesh and pipes used for safety structures, an iron pipe and mesh suddenly fell from above and struck him on the head. He sustained severe injuries and died as a result.
The complaint further alleges that there were no adequate safety arrangements in place at the site. It claims that negligence and failure to follow basic safety norms directly led to the fatal accident.
Assistant Police Inspector Kekan is currently investigating the case. The incident has once again raised serious questions about compliance with safety regulations at construction sites across the city.
“This incident happened due to clear negligence by the builder. Safety nets should be replaced every two to three months, but they had not been changed for seven to eight months. This led to the accident. The victim’s family deserves compensation, but the builder has refused responsibility,” said the site contractor.
