Pune, 21st August 2026: With Ganeshotsav approaching, Pune Police have intensified preparations for a DJ-free Ganeshotsav aimed at reducing noise pollution in the city. Different types of sound systems were installed and tested at the Police Commissionerate on Thursday. Officials checked speaker configurations, bass and top combinations, sound intensity and decibel levels using a decibel monitor.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Sanjay Darade, Special Branch Deputy Commissioner Prashant Amrutkar and Assistant Commissioner Vivek Pawar attended the testing along with Pune Sound Association representatives and sound professionals.
During the tests, police examined different speaker setups and paid particular attention to the use of ‘Pressure Mid’ equipment. Sound professionals said the equipment can significantly increase sound intensity and produce harsh, high-volume noise.
The Pune Sound Association has opposed the use of unauthorised equipment that contributes to excessive noise, while also pointing out that such equipment is still commonly used during public celebrations.
Assistant Commissioner Vivek Pawar said the exercise was aimed at understanding the sound levels produced by different systems.
“All types of DJ systems and their sound levels were tested. We have collected information about equipment that produces excessively loud sound. The findings will be considered while deciding the next course of action,” he said.
The police said the testing was carried out to ensure compliance with the decibel limits prescribed under noise pollution and environmental regulations. Officials are also studying the design of different sound systems and the modifications made to them. The information will be used to formulate further measures for the upcoming festival.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar is expected to hold a meeting with leaders from all political parties to discuss the implementation of the DJ-free Ganeshotsav initiative.
Pune Sound Association president Bablu Ramjani said sound professionals were prepared to follow the law during Ganeshotsav.
“Sound professionals are ready to celebrate Ganeshotsav within the legal framework. If unauthorised equipment that contributes to noise pollution is controlled, it will help reduce the inconvenience caused to citizens”, Ramjani said.
The police and Pune civic administration have already begun preparations for Ganeshotsav. The latest sound-system testing is part of efforts to balance festive celebrations with noise pollution regulations and public safety.
