Pune, 22nd September 2026: Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms lashed Hinjewadi and surrounding areas at around 2.30 pm on Monday (September 21), leaving several major roads in Hinjewadi IT Park, Wakad, Tathawade and Punawale waterlogged. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians faced difficulties as rainwater accumulated on roads.
At Bodkewadi Phata on the Hinjewadi-Maan Road, water reached knee level, making it difficult for two-wheeler riders and pedestrians to pass. Flooding was also reported near the Tathawade-Punawale stretch of the Aundh-Ravet BRTS route, where water from an overflowing stream flowed onto the road.
The heavy rainfall also highlighted gaps in the area's drainage infrastructure. In several locations, clogged drainage lines caused rainwater mixed with sewage and roadside waste to spill onto roads, creating foul-smelling conditions.
The rapidly developing belt of Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale and Hinjewadi has seen extensive growth in housing projects, commercial establishments and IT companies. However, the drainage network in several pockets remains inadequate to handle heavy rainfall.
Waterlogging was also reported on service roads near the Tathawade-Punawale underpass. By evening, traffic congestion was reported on some IT Park roads and nearby highways.
In the Shiv Colony area, food waste from a hotel was washed onto the road, adding to the foul smell. Near Tathawade Chowk, sewage water reportedly flowed along the road for nearly a kilometre, forcing students, workers and other commuters to pass through the contaminated water.
