Pune Metro to Get 15 New Trains with 45 Coaches to Ease Crowding and Boost Commuter Comfort

With a growing number of daily passengers, MahaMetro expands its fleet to strengthen Pune’s public transport network

Pune, 28 June 2025: Pune Metro is set to expand its fleet by adding 15 new trains, which will include 45 additional coaches. This move by MahaMetro is aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and strengthening the city’s public transport system. The decision comes in response to increasing commuter numbers and the recent approval of two new metro routes.

Currently, Pune Metro operates 34 trains with a total of 102 coaches. The addition of 45 new coaches will bring the total to 147 coaches across 49 trains. Each of the new trains will have three coaches. The new trains are expected to ease overcrowding, especially during peak hours, and help reduce travel time.

MahaMetro plans to deploy these new trains once the construction of the newly sanctioned metro routes is complete. This expansion is expected to further strengthen the metro network and increase its reach across Pune.

Hemant Sonawane, General Manager and Executive Director of MahaMetro, said that the daily ridership currently stands at around 1.7 lakh. “We are constantly working to increase metro ridership through feeder services. With the approval of two new routes, more trains are necessary. The 15 new trains will help us meet the growing demand,” he added.

Many daily commuters have welcomed the move, saying it will significantly improve their travel experience. One passenger shared, “This is great news. There’s too much crowd during peak hours. With more trains, the situation should definitely improve.”
