  • Numbers are now slowly recovering post-festival.

Pune, 27 October 2025: Pune Metro faced a significant drop in passenger throughout the Diwali week. On Lakshmi Puja day, only 12,000 commuters used the metro, while other days recorded an average of 13,000 to 14,000 passengers. This sharp fall has impacted revenue for the city’s public transport services.

The drop is mainly due to citizens traveling to their hometowns for the festival. Schools, colleges, and offices were closed during this period, reducing the need for daily commuting. As a result, both Pune Metro and PMPML reported lower usage.

Typically, the Pune Metro serves around 2.36 lakh passengers daily. However, during the festival, this number fell drastically, reaching just 52,482 passengers on Lakshmi Puja, the lowest of the week. The decline began from Dhanteras and continued until the festival’s peak day.

Since Diwali, passenger numbers have started to rise gradually as schools, colleges, and offices reopened. Authorities expect ridership to return to normal levels in the coming days as regular commuting resumes.
