The 23.20-km Metro Line 3 project is being developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The completed first phase runs from Maan Metro Station No. 1 to R.K. Laxman Museum at Balewadi Metro Station No. 12. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) approved passenger operations on the stretch on July 23.

The Metro was expected to start within 10 to 15 days of the approval, but the launch has been delayed as the inauguration schedule is yet to be finalised. PMRDA and concessionaire Pune IT City Metro Rail Company have completed the required operational and administrative formalities for the opening of the section.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had written to the PMO requesting that the inauguration be scheduled according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s availability.

Following the request, the PMO sought an administrative report from the state government. The General Administration Department then directed the Pune district administration to submit the report on an urgent basis.

The district administration has now completed the process and submitted a detailed report to the PMO. The next step is expected to be the finalisation and announcement of the inauguration date.

PMRDA is also working to extend operations further towards Shivajinagar. The authority is considering bringing another four stations on the Shivajinagar side into the operational scope.

Work on this section has been accelerated, with PMRDA directing the concerned agencies to increase the pace of construction and related activities.

The district administration has submitted a detailed report on the project to the Prime Minister’s Office. Work has also been accelerated towards Shivajinagar so that more stations can be brought into operation.
Dr Abhijit Chaudhary, Commissioner, PMRDA

The completed Maan-Balewadi stretch is now awaiting the final inauguration schedule, while preparations continue to extend the Metro corridor towards Shivajinagar.
