Pune, 25 July 2025: The Pune Metro Line 3 project, which connects the Hinjawadi IT Park to Shivajinagar, moved a step closer to becoming operational as its second trial run was completed successfully. The train ran at a speed of 40 km/h, validating key technical systems along the 23.3-km elevated corridor.
Currently, about 87% of the construction work is done, according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Designed to transform urban mobility in Pune, this line includes 23 stations, aiming to reduce road congestion in major zones, particularly around the Hinjawadi IT belt and Shivajinagar’s transit hub.
Built under a public-private partnership between PMRDA and Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (PITCRL), the project features fully air-conditioned 3-coach trains with a capacity of 1,000 passengers and a top speed of 80 km/h. The complete line is targeted for launch by March 2026.
However, to address immediate transit needs, authorities are planning a partial early launch of a 13-km stretch from Megapolis Circle to Balewadi Phata by September 2025. This will offer relief to thousands of daily commuters navigating Pune’s busy tech corridor.
Once operational, Pune Metro Line 3 is expected to significantly boost public transport usage, improve last-mile connectivity, and support the city's ongoing smart urban infrastructure goals.
