Pune, 30 April 2026: A midnight gas leak at a chemical warehouse on Gangadham Chowk–Bibwewadi Road triggered panic in the area after several residents reported breathing difficulties and eye irritation.

The incident affected 24 people, including four children, while two firefighters were also hospitalized due to exposure.

The leak occurred around 1 am at a warehouse belonging to a chemical company located opposite Aai Mata Temple. A 200-litre chlorine gas tank, reportedly old, began leaking suddenly, releasing gas into nearby residential areas. Residents from Kondhwa and Bibwewadi experienced discomfort, prompting an immediate alert to the fire brigade.

Firefighters arrived quickly and entered the premises wearing protective breathing apparatus to control the leak. Affected residents were shifted to Sassoon Hospital for treatment. During the operation, Station Officer Sunil Naiknavare and firefighter Dhananjay Bhise also suffered breathing issues and were admitted for medical care.

Chief Fire Officer Devendra Potphode said that 24 residents and two fire personnel were affected, but no serious injuries were reported. He confirmed that all patients are stable and receiving treatment.

Around five officers and 30 fire personnel participated in the rescue operation. Their timely response prevented the situation from escalating into a major disaster, according to local residents.

Meanwhile, Bibwewadi Police have detained the warehouse manager for questioning, and further investigation into safety lapses is underway.
