Pune, 13th June 2026: Even after a 13 days into the June month city is yet to witness its first rain of the season. There is no rainfall recorded in Pune for last 21 days and according to India Meteorological Department (IMD), dry conditions are expected to continue till June 18. Major rainfall is also not expected in Pune’s catchment areas until around June 21.
The delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon has affected large parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune. Weather experts have attributed the slowdown to the influence of western disturbances and weather systems over northwest India, which have disrupted the normal flow of monsoon winds.
Data from the IMD shows that Pune has not received any rainfall during the first 13 days of June, a rare occurrence not seen since at least 2014. The prolonged dry weather has also pushed temperatures higher.
On June 12, Shivajinagar observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 26.1 degrees Celsius, the highest June minimum temperature since 2019 and the second-highest recorded in the last decade.
Rainfall deficits have widened across Maharashtra during the June 1–12 period. Vidarbha recorded a deficit of 73 percent, while Madhya Maharashtra was down by 68 percent. Konkan registered 67 percent below-normal rainfall, and Marathwada reported a deficit of 43 percent.
Meanwhile, El Niño conditions have re-emerged over the Pacific Ocean and are expected to strengthen further in the coming months. The IMD has indicated that the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), another important climate factor influencing the monsoon, is likely to remain in a neutral phase throughout the season.
With rainfall remaining scarce and forecasts showing no immediate improvement, concerns are growing over water availability, agriculture, and reservoir inflows across several parts of the state.
