Pune, 10 March 2026: In a bid to curb overspeeding and improve road safety, Pune Rural Police have installed advanced laser speed cameras on the Mumbai–Pune National Highway near Vadgaon Maval and Lonavala.
The cameras will operate round the clock and help authorities take action against drivers who violate speed limits.
The initiative has been introduced in response to the increasing number of accidents on the highway, many of which are linked to excessive speed and driver negligence. Police believe that stricter monitoring will encourage motorists to follow traffic rules and maintain safe speeds while travelling on the busy route.
According to Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeepsing Gill, most highway accidents occur due to overspeeding and driver error. “To improve traffic discipline and prevent accidents, we have started using laser speed cameras on the Mumbai–Pune highway,” he said.
The project is being implemented with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and the Global Road Safety Partnership.
Three cameras have been installed at different points in the Lonavala and Vadgaon Maval areas. Equipped with modern technology, these devices can accurately record vehicle speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour and function effectively during both day and night.
Apart from detecting vehicles that cross the speed limit, the system can also capture photographs and videos of violations. This will enable police to take action against motorists who break other traffic rules as well, including riding without helmets or using mobile phones while driving.
Officials said serious accidents remain a major concern in Pune district, particularly those involving two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. Authorities expect that strict monitoring of speeding cars and heavy vehicles through these cameras will help reduce accidents and improve overall road safety on the highway.
