Pune, 19 July 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is accelerating work on the high-capacity sewage treatment plant (STP) near Naidu Hospital, located close to Pune Railway Station. Once operational, this facility will significantly improve the city’s ability to process wastewater, easing the environmental burden on the Mula-Mutha River.
This STP is the largest among 11 similar plants being constructed across the city under the Mula-Mutha River Pollution Abatement Project. The initiative is funded through financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is being implemented under India’s National River Conservation Plan.
During an inspection visit on Thursday (July 17), Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram emphasized the importance of this particular plant, which has a treatment capacity of 127 MLD (million litres per day). He noted that, “The work on this STP is being prioritized due to its scale. We are aiming to complete all the projects by March 2026.”
The overall project aims to curb pollution in the Mula and Mutha rivers by treating sewage effectively at multiple nodes across the city. The Naidu STP is seen as a cornerstone of this mission due to its strategic location and high capacity.
