Pune: No lockdown but strict norms may be enforced, says Mayor

Pune: Due to the sudden spike in the spread of COVID-19 cases around the state of Maharashtra, Pune once the epicentre of the novel virus is also under scanner.

Pune administration may plan to impose strict norms to curb the spread after the surge in COVID cases in the district.

On Wednesday, Pune city saw 1,384 new cases, according to the data released by the health department. With this, the number of cases in the Pune division stood at 5,46,396 and death tally at 11,813. While Pune on Tuesday recorded over 2,000 new COVID-19 cases after a gap of more than five months.

Raising concern over the sudden rise in cases, Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol on Wednesday said that in the first week of February, the cases were 1,300. However, in a month, that number went to 7,000. He also informed that testing and swab collection centres are being increased amid the region showing rise in the spread of contagion. When asked about the imposition of lockdown in Pune, the mayor said that there is no plan currently to enforce lockdown but the administration is in talks to increase more restrictions at public places.

Maharashtra, including many districts such as Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, has been seeing a spike in the number of daily cases and authorities around the state have been enforcing night curfews and localised lockdowns (Janata Curfew) to curb the spread. Districts such as Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad are under strict night curfews and weekend lockdowns to curtail the further spread.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Wednesday reported 13,659 new COVID cases, the highest one-day spike this year, which took the state's caseload to 22,52,057.
