Pune October Heat: Mercury Hits 35.7°C, 8th-Highest October Temperature; 36–37°C Forecast

Pune, 8th October 2026: City is experiencing an unusually hot October, with daytime temperatures moving closer to historical extremes. Shivajinagar recorded a maximum of 35.7°C on Tuesday, making it the eighth-highest October temperature recorded at the station. The temperature remained high on Wednesday at 35.2°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperatures of 36–37°C over the next few days. If temperatures reach 37°C, the current spell could rank among Pune's highest October heat events.

The high temperatures are not limited to Shivajinagar. On Wednesday, Lohegaon recorded 35.8°C, Chinchwad 35.2°C, Pashan 34.4°C, Magarpatta 33.6°C and NDA 33.8°C.

Night temperatures are also remaining above normal. Minimum temperatures are expected to approach 23°C, making nights warmer and increasing discomfort for residents. The combination of clear skies, dry conditions and the seasonal transition after the southwest monsoon is contributing to the rise in daytime temperatures.

The current heat spell is notable when compared with October temperatures recorded during earlier El Niño years.

Shivajinagar recorded October maximums of 36.9°C in 2002, 34.4°C in 2015 and 34.7°C in 2023. Tuesday's 35.7°C was therefore higher than the October peaks recorded in 2015 and 2023, although it remained 1.2°C below the 2002 level.

A temperature of 37°C in the coming days would bring Pune close to the highest October temperatures in its historical record.

The unusual heat in Pune comes against the backdrop of strengthening El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region have crossed 30°C, an exceptional level that highlights the intensity of the current warming in the central tropical Pacific.

The Niño 3.4 region is a key area monitored for assessing El Niño conditions. Its unusually high sea surface temperatures indicate strong warming across the tropical Pacific and add to concerns about the broader global climate pattern.

For Pune, however, local weather conditions remain the immediate factor influencing temperatures. With IMD forecasting 36–37°C maximum temperatures, the city could see another few days of intense October heat.

If the mercury reaches 37°C, Pune's current October spell would move significantly closer to the city's historical temperature extremes. With minimum temperatures also staying around 23°C, residents are likely to experience both hotter afternoons and warmer nights in the days ahead.
