Pune, 3rd November 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will start a paid parking system on a trial basis from December to tackle growing problems of traffic congestion and unruly parking across the city. The civic body has nearly completed preparations, and the system is expected to be ready by the end of November.
Under this plan, parking fees will be ₹4 for two-wheelers and ₹20 for four-wheelers, applicable between 8 am and 10 pm. Parking will remain free after 10 pm. The initiative is meant to regulate parking in busy areas, discourage vehicle owners from leaving their vehicles parked for long hours, and improve road usage efficiency.
Permanent parking on crowded streets has long been a concern for citizens and the traffic police. After repeated complaints, PMC revived its long-pending paid parking proposal, which was initially approved in principle in March 2018.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram recently reviewed the plan with senior traffic police officials. As part of the scheme, “no parking” zones will be created within 50 meters of key junctions, while selected stretches will be marked as paid parking zones.
PMC’s Special Projects Department head Dinkar Gojare said that the proposal would be placed before the Standing Committee, with the tender process expected to conclude next week. Once all procedures are completed, the civic body will begin implementing the system on a trial basis next month.
The five roads identified for the pilot phase include Junglee Maharaj Road, Fergusson College Road (Gokhale Road), Laxmi Road, High Street in Balewadi, Viman Nagar Road, and Bibvewadi Road.
If the pilot proves successful, the paid parking model will be extended to other parts of Pune in subsequent phases, officials confirmed.
