Pune, 15th May 2026: The Standing Committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal for the restoration and conservation of the historic underground water pipeline built during the Peshwa era between Katraj and Shaniwarwada.
After final approval from the General Body, the civic administration will begin surveys and prepare a detailed project report for the restoration work.
The Katraj-Shaniwarwada water pipeline is regarded as one of the finest examples of engineering and planned water management from the Peshwa period. Water from Katraj lake was supplied to the Shaniwarwada area nearly 20 kilometres away through underground stone and clay pipelines using the natural slope of the terrain.
Though parts of the historic structure still exist, several sections remain neglected and damaged. During construction and civic development works across Pune, portions of the underground pipeline are frequently discovered and in some cases harmed.
Corporator Suhas Tingre raised the issue during the Standing Committee meeting and demanded immediate steps for conservation. He pointed out that the remains of the historic water system could disappear if restoration efforts are delayed further.
He also stressed the need for a detailed archaeological and technical survey to identify and document the remaining sections of the underground network before preparing the restoration plan.
Standing Committee officials said the project will include conservation and rebuilding of underground pipelines, reservoirs, water tanks, and related structures linked to the historic water supply system.
The PMC is also considering developing the initiative as a heritage conservation project. Plans are being discussed to install information boards and organize study visits and heritage tourism activities so that citizens and students can learn about Pune’s historic water management system and architectural legacy.
