Pune: Civic Body Pilots Online Water Tanker Tracking System, Citywide Rollout Under Consideration

The system enables real-time monitoring of water tanker deliveries, aiming to improve transparency and ensure timely supply in water-scarce areas.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced an online water tanker management system on a pilot basis at its Pashan tanker filling station to improve transparency and streamline water distribution in scarcity-hit areas. The civic body is now considering expanding the system across the city following its success in Sus and Mahalunge.

The digital platform tracks the entire process, from tanker requests by housing societies to water delivery, ensuring timely supply and reducing operational discrepancies. Residents receive details of the assigned tanker, driver information, and a one-time password (OTP) to verify delivery.

Despite the implementation of PMC's ₹2,400-crore Equal Water Supply Scheme, several suburban areas continue to face inadequate water supply and low pressure, forcing the civic body to provide free tanker services. PMC spends over ₹50 crore annually on tanker contracts.

The pilot project was launched after residents of Sus and Mahalunge approached the court over water shortages. Following court directions, PMC began tanker supply from the Pashan filling station and developed a software-based monitoring system to ensure efficient distribution.

The platform currently serves 104 housing societies comprising nearly 19,000 residential units in Sus and Mahalunge. Tanker allocation is based on the number of flats in a society, with one tanker assigned for every 100 residences.

According to PMC Water Supply Department Head Nandkishor Jagtap, the pilot has delivered positive results and could be replicated citywide after a detailed technical assessment.
