Pune Municipal Corporation Parking Crunch Impacts Citizens First

Lack of space at Pune Municipal Corporation leaves taxpayers stranded while priority parking is reserved for corporators

Pune, 28 January 2026: The parking space problem at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified. Due to inadequate parking space within the civic body premises, vehicles belonging to taxpayers are no longer being allowed inside, creating daily inconvenience for people visiting PMC for official work.

Despite the parking issue being evident for the past two to three years, no long-term solution was implemented. After the municipal elections, the situation worsened as parking space in the new PMC building was reserved for corporators and their supporters. As a result, space for nearly 300 to 400 two-wheelers that earlier parked there has been eliminated.

PMC employees have been provided parking space near the building, but even that has proved insufficient. The existing multi-level parking facility is unable to accommodate both staff and citizens, leading to arguments and chaos on the premises. On Wednesday, several citizens were forced to park their vehicles in no-parking zones on the main road outside the PMC building.

Every day, around 1,000 to 1,500 citizens visit PMC offices related to urban poor schemes, certificates, construction permissions, encroachment issues, health services, and water supply. With no dedicated parking facility for them, citizens found themselves stuck, and security personnel reportedly stopped vehicles at the gates, preventing entry altogether.

Speaking on the issue, PMC security officer Rakesh Vitkar said that planning is underway to address the shortage of parking space. He added that parking in front of the main PMC building is currently available for citizens, but it is inadequate. Efforts are being made to improve the situation and create additional parking space, he said.
