Pune, 17th October 2026: Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has assigned the charge of the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) property tax department to Additional Commissioner Prajit Nair, removing the responsibility from Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divte.
The property tax department is a major source of revenue for the civic body, which requires substantial funds for ongoing development projects. The department has reportedly suffered a revenue shortfall of ₹700 crore, attributed to factors including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and census-related activities.
The PMC is also seeking better coordination between its property tax and information technology (IT) departments. A few months ago, the theft of a hard disk containing property owners' data raised concerns about the security of civic records.
Nair, who already oversees the IT department, has introduced changes to its functioning. He has also reportedly reduced the involvement of certain contractual employees in the property tax department, curbing their influence over its operations.
The IT department is working to identify properties that have not been assessed for tax, those whose usage has changed and properties with unauthorised construction. These efforts are expected to help the PMC expand its tax base and improve revenue collection.
The decision to place the property tax department under Nair is aimed at strengthening its functioning through better use of technology, improved coordination and more effective identification of taxable properties.
