Pune, 14 April 2026: In a major push to improve passenger safety and reduce accidents, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is planning to install CCTV cameras inside buses as well as on dashboards.

The proposal also includes upgrading its control room into a modern command center for real-time monitoring of bus operations.

The initiative was discussed during a recent board meeting, with a final decision expected on April 24. The move is aimed at closely tracking driver behaviour, identifying causes of accidents, and strengthening overall safety mechanisms.

Under the plan, dashboard cameras will capture drivers’ actions, helping authorities determine whether accidents are caused by driver error or other road users.

The system will also help detect violations such as mobile phone usage, rash driving, and negligence. Cameras inside buses will further enhance passenger security.

Alongside this, PMPML intends to transform its existing control room into a high-tech monitoring hub. This upgraded system will allow officials to track buses in real time and respond quickly to emergencies, significantly reducing response time during accidents or untoward incidents.

The proposal comes amid rising concerns over bus safety. PMPML records over 50 accidents every year, and between April 2022 and June 2025, a total of 385 accidents were reported.

Notably, 237 of these involved contractor-operated buses, leading to 87 deaths, highlighting the urgent need for stricter monitoring and safety reforms.
