Pune, 19 July 2025: A police constable has been booked for allegedly cheating a jeweller of over ₹8.22 lakh by taking gold ornaments on credit and failing to pay for them. The incident came to light after the victim approached Chaturshrungi Police Station with a formal complaint.
The accused has been identified as Ganesh Ashok Jagtap, a police constable residing in Kaverinagar Police Quarters, Wakad. His daughter has also been named in the FIR. According to the complaint, Jagtap, who was acquainted with the jeweller, took the jewellery from the jeweller’s outlet in Aundh in August 2024, promising to make payment later.
However, when the jeweller repeatedly asked for the money, Jagtap began avoiding him. Realizing he had been deceived, the jeweller reported the matter to senior police officials. Following internal inquiries, Jagtap was suspended from duty.
Further investigation revealed that Jagtap had also allegedly defrauded a woman known to him. He reportedly took 73 tolas of gold jewellery and ₹17 lakh from her and her husband, claiming the money was urgently needed for his daughter’s medical education. He then failed to return the valuables, prompting the woman to file a complaint at Kothrud Police Station, where another fraud case was registered against him.
This is not the first time Jagtap has faced serious allegations. In a prior case, he was found to have tampered with his service record in an attempt to hide past disciplinary action. With the help of a clerk at the Police Commissioner’s Office, he allegedly tore out original pages from his service book and replaced them. A criminal case was registered at Bundgarden Police Station in this regard, and both he and the clerk were arrested.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into all complaints involving Jagtap.
