Pune Civic Body Clears 50% Property Tax Rebate for Women-Owned Homes Up to 500 sq ft

Pune Municipal Corporation: Decision marks a shift from BJP’s earlier promise; proposal to be sent to state government after general body approval

Pune, 24 April 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal granting a 50% property tax rebate exclusively to homes up to 500 square feet registered in the name of women.

The decision was cleared during the standing committee meeting held on Thursday and will now be placed before the general body. After final approval, it will be sent to the state government.

The move marks a shift from the earlier election promise made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had assured tax relief for all properties up to 500 sq ft. After coming to power, however, the party limited the benefit to women property owners while presenting the municipal budget.

According to civic data, around 70,773 properties fall under this category, generating nearly ₹40.48 crore in revenue. With the 50% rebate, officials estimate a revenue loss of about ₹20 crore.

The administration had sought legal opinion before placing the proposal, which was subsequently approved by the standing committee. The proposal will now move to the next stage of approval.

Separately, the civic body has decided to cut costs on printing property tax bills. Instead of spending ₹50–60 lakh annually on printing nearly 15 lakh bills, notices, and warrants, the work will now be handled free of cost by a sponsoring bank, which will display its logo on the bills.

Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale said, “The proposal to offer a 50% property tax rebate to properties registered in the name of women has been approved in the standing committee.”

The scheme will apply only to properties registered in women’s names as of March 31, 2025, and will be valid for the financial year 2026–27. It will not cover any pending dues, interest, penalties, or charges before April 1, 2026. Properties already receiving a 40% concession may instead get a reduced benefit of 25% under the revised proposal.
