Speaking about the inspiration behind her decision, Vaidya said, “During my college days, I had read a story in All My Sons by a French author. It was about a father who lost his only son in war and later dedicated his life to helping injured soldiers and the families of martyrs. That story stayed with me forever and inspired me to do something for the nation.”

She added, “I have always believed that one should give back to society. This contribution is my small effort towards serving the country and supporting those who protect us.”

The donation has been distributed among six military institutions working for injured soldiers, families of fallen jawans, and defense-related research activities.

Originally from Dapoli in the Konkan region, Vaidya completed her schooling at the Hingne Maharshi Karve institution in Pune and later earned her BA and BEd degrees from the University of Mumbai.

She served as a secondary school teacher at M.H. Vidyalaya in Thane until her retirement in 1998. At the age of 44, she also completed her postgraduate studies in Marathi.

Her son Anand Vaidya and daughter Madhuri Bapat fully supported her decision, turning the contribution into a collective family commitment towards national service. Vijayatai Vaidya’s gesture is now being hailed as a rare and inspiring example of selfless patriotism and social responsibility.
