Pune, 18 February 2026: A shocking murder case has come to light in the city, where a 40-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by six men who later dumped her body into a quarry to avoid suspicion. The deceased has been identified as Shafiya Salim Shaikh.
Her body was discovered on February 10 in a quarry at Mangdewadi. Following the discovery, a case was registered at Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station, and the Crime Branch launched an investigation. Based on CCTV footage, technical analysis, and local inputs, police traced and arrested all six accused.
According to police officials, Shafiya was engaged in sex work. On the night of February 8, she was reportedly standing near Kanha Chowk in the Kondhwa area in an intoxicated state when three of the accused approached her.
They allegedly told her they would take her to a lodge in Katraj but instead took her to a hill near a quarry in Mangdewadi.
After some time, three more accused joined them at the spot. While consuming alcohol on the hill, Shafiya questioned the men about why they had brought her there instead of to a lodge. This led to an argument, which escalated into a violent assault. During the assault, she sustained fatal injuries.
To conceal the crime, the accused allegedly threw her body into a quarry that was around 50 to 55 feet deep. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in the murder. All six have been arrested and charged with murder. Further investigation is underway.
Reacting to the incident, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, “There is no incident of gangrape in this case. A body was found, and the woman had gone with the accused. Six accused are in our custody. No sexual assault has come to light. This is a case of murder.”
