Pune: Skeletal remains of animals – estimated to be a few thousand years old – were found during the ongoing digging work for the metro station at Mandai. Although archaeological experts are yet to ascertain the period and age of the remains, it is believed that those are of elephant-sized-like animals. Last year, metro workers had found a tunnel while digging at the Swargate metro station site.

The Pune Metro workers are working on the underground metro station at Mahatma Phule Mandai area in Budhwar Peth. The digging work at the site is going on. A pit of about 10 metres depth has already been dug till now. Workers spotted some skeletal remains and kept it aside.

Archaeological experts said that the depth at which these remains have been found is quite interesting. Since Pune city has a historical significance it is important to study these remains, which might bring to light unexplored historical evidence and facts related to the region.

Earlier in March 2019, a tunnel believed to be of the British-era and once used for water channelling, was found during digging work of the Pune Metro station at Swargate about two kilometres away from the Mandai area. The tunnel was 57 metre-long, 12 to 15 feet beneath the surface and 1.4 meters wide and 3.5 meters high.
