Pune, 17th February 2026: Pune residents could face water shortages as the Water Resources Department has ordered the PMC to pay pending dues of ₹932.88 crore within 15 days, warning that supply may be cut if the payment isn’t made.
Authorities reported that Pune is allotted 11.60 TMC of water annually. By January 31, the city had consumed 11.23 TMC, leaving just 0.36 TMC remaining, which is expected to last approximately 12 to 15 days at the present rate of use. The department officially communicated that once the sanctioned quota is depleted, no more water can be extracted from the Khadakwasla Dam.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) currently owes ₹932.88 crore in water dues, according to department records. While the civic body recently cleared ₹19.75 crore for November and December charges, the bulk of the arrears remains unpaid as of February-end.
A senior official warned that the PMC has been instructed to settle the outstanding amount promptly, cautioning that water supply could be suspended immediately if both the allocated quota runs out and payments remain unsettled.
According to figures provided by officials, in the 2024-25 fiscal year, PMC used 8.84 TMC more water than its approved allocation. The Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority stipulates that if consumption exceeds 25 percent of the allotted quota, a penalty of 1.5 times the water rate is imposed, which rises to three times the rate if usage goes beyond that limit.
