Pune, 6th June 2026: Lakhs of residents across eastern parts of the city have been receiving discoloured water for the past 21 days, sparking concerns over public health and the water distribution system. Despite repeated complaints, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has not yet identified the reason behind the yellowish water supply.
The affected areas include Sanjay Park, Viman Nagar, Mhada Colony, SRA settlements, Yamuna Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi North and South, parts of Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Lohegaon, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, Nagar Road and Wadgaon Sheri.
These localities receive water from the Bhama Askhed dam system, and residents have reported that the water often appears yellow and carries an unpleasant smell.
Following complaints from citizens, PMC officials collected water samples and sent them for laboratory testing. The test results reportedly confirmed that the water is safe for drinking, but officials have been unable to explain the persistent discolouration.
Speaking at a press conference, local leader Nandini Dhende said residents continue to face difficulties due to the poor quality of water being supplied. “When the water supply begins, muddy water flows from taps for nearly half an hour. Although it becomes clearer later, the yellowish colour remains. We inspected the Bhama Askhed water treatment plant and found the water there to be clean, which suggests the problem may lie somewhere in the distribution network,” she said.
Former corporator Dr. Siddharth Dhende called for a detailed investigation into the issue and urged the civic administration to identify the root cause at the earliest. He said the matter should be treated seriously as a large population depends on this water supply every day.
“PMC must conduct a deeper inquiry and determine why residents are receiving discoloured water. If the issue continues, it could pose health risks to lakhs of citizens. If a solution is not found within the next two days, we will launch a public protest,” Dr. Dhende said.
