Pune, 3rd February 2026: Commuters in Pune’s eastern suburbs may soon see lasting relief from severe traffic congestion, as MahaMetro has formally launched the tender process for the Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro extension under Phase II of the Pune Metro project.
The 11.63-km elevated corridor, planned along Ahilyanagar Road, aims to strengthen connectivity across key residential and commercial hubs such as Viman Nagar, Kharadi and Wagholi, while also offering faster access to Pune International Airport.
MahaMetro has set a completion target of three and a half years after finalisation of tendering and contract procedures.
The project will be implemented in coordination with the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation as part of an integrated double-decker transport corridor. Under this plan, MSIDC will construct a six-lane elevated road, while MahaMetro will build the Metro viaduct above it along the same alignment, optimising space and infrastructure use.
The corridor will feature 11 elevated stations, including Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tuljabhavani Nagar, Ubalenagar, Upper Kharadi Road, Wagheshwar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharth Nagar, Bakori Phata and Vitthalwadi.
Construction will be carried out in phases, with the first phase covering a 4.8-km stretch from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Nagar. Tenders for this phase, which includes four stations and access ramps, have already been floated, with bids due by March 4.
The Pune–Ahilyanagar Road corridor is among the city’s most congested routes, with daily commuters and air travellers frequently facing long delays. The Metro extension addresses a long-standing demand to extend mass transit beyond Ramwadi.
The Detailed Project Report, estimated at ₹3,624 crore, has received approvals from both the state and central governments.
Project momentum had earlier slowed due to the model code of conduct during local body elections and parallel planning of the elevated road project. With state cabinet approval and inter-agency coordination now in place, both projects are moving forward simultaneously.
The extension is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, especially employees working in Kharadi’s IT parks and nearby commercial areas. By shifting more travellers to high-capacity public transport, the corridor is projected to reduce dependence on private vehicles and cut travel time in one of Pune’s fastest-growing zones.
