Pune: As a part of the ‘Fast Emergency Response’ initiative, more than 140 traffic police personnel participated in a workshop conducted by Sahyadri Hospitals recently on Basic Life Support (BLS) session. The workshop was conducted for the three traffic police divisions in the city.

The training was held at Sahyadri Hospital Bibwewadi, Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Nagar Road and Sahyadri Hospital Hadapsar. The traffic police personnel involved in the training were from three divisions - Sahakarnagar division, Hadapsar division and Yerwada division. The session demonstrated how to deal with road accident injuries, including a short Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for emergencies.

Dr Charudutt Apte, Chairman and Managing Director, Sahyadri Hospitals said that Pune witnesses some of the most fatal road accidents in the country.

“While traffic police are the first line of contact, it is the duty of medical practitioners to provide them basic training, which will further help them deal with road accidents,” said Apte.

Ashok Morale, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pune, also attended one of the sessions at Sahyadri Hospitals, Nagar Road. “During an accident, it is often noticed that people are confused about how to handle the victim physically and manage the situation. Such sessions will help us use the right techniques and confidently serve the road accident victim,” said Morale.

Dr Venkat Holsambre, Head, Medical Services, Sahyadri Hospitals, said that we have often noticed that during a road accident, the spectators are left clueless about how to act.
“Either an ambulance is called or the victim is taken to the hospital. However, there are few more things that can be done, which can save lives. While giving CPR to a victim, it assures that oxygen is reaching, which increases the chances of a patient to overcome the injury and decreases the mortality rate. Since traffic police are present at the spot, this knowledge will help them take the lead and save lives,” said Holsambre.
