Pune, 3rd July 2025: The 99-year lease agreement between Sassoon General Hospital (BJ Government Medical College) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for a two-acre plot is set to expire in June 2026. With the lease term nearing its end, Sassoon Hospital has formally requested that the land be returned to facilitate its expansion plans.

The hospital administration has communicated with both the Medical Education Department and the District Collector’s office, urging that the lease not be renewed once it concludes next year. According to the hospital, regaining control of the approximately 8,000 square meters of land would enable them to expand medical services and introduce new facilities.

Although the NIV continues its research and testing operations on the premises, the institute already has another office and lab located just 300 meters away on Ambedkar Road, also previously allotted by Sassoon Hospital. Moreover, the NIV has developed a larger campus in Pashan, which can support its operations independently.

Sassoon officials believe that reclaiming the land will help ease the existing space crunch and allow for the development of improved facilities for patients, medical students, and visiting relatives.

The matter was recently reviewed by Minister of State for Medical Education, Madhuri Misal, who directed the hospital to submit a formal proposal for further consideration. The District Collector and Medical Education Department are expected to discuss the matter before a final decision is made.

Hospital authorities also confirmed that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had discussed the issue in April and had expressed support for returning the land to Sassoon.

Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of Sassoon Hospital, stated that Sassoon is a tertiary care hospital facing severe space constraints. With the lease nearing expiration, they have submitted a proposal to the concerned departments for reclaiming the land to strengthen healthcare services.

If the land is returned, the hospital plans to use it for constructing a multispecialty wing, a dental hospital, a physiotherapy college, as well as hostel facilities for postgraduate students and accommodation for patients' relatives. The proximity of the land to the main hospital would also help in relocating some departments, easing congestion at the existing facility.
