PUNE: Members of Students Federation of India (SFI) and National Students Union of India (NSUI) protested on the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus on Tuesday against the shameful assault on girl students of BHU.
SFI members also slammed the casual reaction of BHU Vice-Chancellor Girish Tripathi in his recent interview to electronic media. “Being a VC of a renowned university and having a casual approach to the grave incident, is ridiculous. He was laughing while answering questions,” said Satish Gore, member NSUI.
“Girls asking for safety have been lathicharged. What kind of justice is this? This is not how students must be treated,” said Anjali Bhale, member of SFI. SFI has demanded removal of the BHU VC stating that the VC is incompetent.
NSUI members met the SPPU VC and submitted a memorandum. Similar memorandums have been submitted at all universities across the State.
SPPU no different than BHU
“There are no women security guards outside the girls hostel at SPPU as well. After several complaints made by students, the university had finally deployed CCTV cameras, but footage from them is generally blurred. There have been several cases of sexual assaults on girls in the SPPU campus as well. The only difference between BHU and SPPU is that the girls there came forward against such incidents and voiced their grievances,” said Gore.
