PUNE: Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) upgraded its liver transplant unit with the help of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partner Mukul Madhav Foundation (MMF) with medical equipment worth Rs 1.3 crore.

The city-based general hospital has been hiring equipment from other hospitals to perform procedures and to carry out cadaver operations. This method was hampering the patients and the hospital could not cater to the needs of the common man. The hospital authorities then approached MMF to support this division.

Speaking about the unit, Ritu Chhabria, Managing Trustee, Mukul Madhav Foundation, said that the existing set-up at SGH has a good faculty including residents and honorary medical professionals committed to serving the needy.

“Looking at this need we decided to enhance and support this initiative. Setting up these kinds of services in government hospitals will enable the common man to avail specialised services at nominal and affordable costs than compared to private hospitals and at times travelling to other metros for treatment,” added Chhabria.  The unit was inaugurated on Sunday by the patients who underwent successful liver transplants at the hospital. 

Speaking during the inauguration, Dr Sudhir Nanandkar said that patients do not prefer government-run hospitals. But because of such new and upcoming facilities at the hospital, many have chosen to take treatment here.
