Encroachments and Rash Driving Turns Busy Swargate's Jedhe Chowk into Danger Zone

With increasing risks of life of pedestrians, citizens demand immediate action from civic authorities after a recent fatal accident

Pune, 4th February 2026: Traffic conditions at Jodhe Chowk have become a serious cause for concern, putting pedestrians’ lives at constant risk. Located in the busy Swargate area, the junction has witnessed a sharp rise in encroachments along all four sides of the road, worsening movement for pedestrians.

Footpaths at the junction are occupied by handcarts, roadside stalls and irregular vehicle parking, forcing people to walk directly on the road. As a result, pedestrians are exposed to speeding and undisciplined traffic throughout the day.

The dangers were highlighted on January 29, when a senior citizen cyclist from Janata Vasahat lost his life after being hit by a speeding dumper at the junction. Police later registered a case against the dumper driver for driving under the influence of alcohol. Locals say this incident reflects a larger and recurring safety problem at the chowk.

Traffic congestion peaks during office hours in the morning and evening, making road crossing particularly hazardous. Vehicles often ignore traffic rules, with two-wheelers making sudden turns and heavy vehicles passing through at high speed, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Residents have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to immediately remove encroachments and restore footpaths for pedestrians. They have also demanded an increased presence of traffic police at the junction and strict action against rule violators.

“Will the authorities act only after another serious accident?” citizens asked, expressing frustration over continued inaction.
