Three-month-old baby gets a new lease of life after critical surgery

ST CORRESPONDENT

Pune: A three-month-old baby with a critical heart condition was given a new lease of life after a successful surgery at a city-based hospital.

The 3-month-old infant from Walwa taluka of Sangli had a high heart beat rate and palpitation. Besides this, the infant had no other symptoms such as chest pain or turning blue due to lack of blood supply. It was already suffering from an infection and the baby underwent a few medical check-ups. The 2D echo test reflected a flaw in the heart called ‘Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return’ (TAPVR). This condition affects the regular blood supply to the heart.

The baby underwent a cardiac surgery successfully at city-based Oyster and Pearl (ONP) - Prime Hospitals in Shivajinagar. At the time of the surgery, the baby was weighing only 4.56 kg.

The parents of the child are daily wagers. The complicated surgery was done free of cost.

Giving details about the surgery, Dr Amita Phadnis, Director, ONP Hospitals, said the surgery was challenging and risky because of the age of the infant and his weight, which was below 10 kg. “But this challenge was taken up by our doctors. The baby was operated upon,”  said Dr Phadnis.

“And being a surgery of such a small infant, the child had to be strictly monitored afterwards to prevent him from getting sepsis. He was discharged from the hospital within seven days after the surgery. Now, the baby is in a very good and healthy condition,” Dr Phadnis added. Dr Shrinivas Kini performed the surgery whereas Dr Yashdeep Kalmankar and Dr Prasad Balte were part of the team.
