Pune, 2nd February 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has allocated ₹517 crore for Pune Metro in the Union Budget, giving a significant boost to metro development in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The funding is expected to accelerate both ongoing construction and future expansion plans.
Although the budget does not clearly specify how the funds will be distributed, officials indicated that the allocation will mainly support current metro works and the proposed Khadakwasla–Hadapsar–Kharadi–Wagholi corridor. This route is seen as crucial for improving east–west connectivity and easing traffic congestion in fast-growing areas.
In addition, a portion of the funds may be used for the Swargate–Katraj underground metro project, which is already under construction. The project is expected to improve connectivity to southern parts of Pune.
Pune Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar said, "New allocation will help speed up metro expansion and improve commuter convenience, adding that the focus will remain on completing priority routes efficiently."
With this funding support, Pune Metro is expected to gain momentum, bringing the city closer to a more reliable and accessible public transport network.
