Pune: In order to bring in a long-term solution to the refectory issues at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Nitin Karmalkar has formed a high-level committee of six members to analyse and evaluate the ongoing issues at the students’ mess.

The refectory has been in a tight spot the past few weeks for a series of issues, from bad quality food served to protest at the mess. Followed by this, higher authorities of the varsity held a meeting on Wednesday.

The committee will be chaired by former VC of Kaviyatri Bahinabai North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, RS Mali, Member Secretary of the committee, Prabhakar Desai (Dean of Students Welfare Department) along with other members including, Senate members Sanjay Chakane and Manohar Jadhav, Dean of Science and Technology Arvind Shaligram and Head of Law Department Durgambini Patel.

The V-C has directed the committee to analyse all the reasons of complaints and protests held related to the refectory, students’ resentment over new rules which were issued on Saturday that mainly include no sharing of meals and restrict non-members of the refectory. Following this, over hundreds of students had aggressively protested on Monday. University has filed an FIR against students who were involved in it at Chatuhshrungi police station. 

The report will be submitted within 15 days.

“The committee will identify the issues, evaluate all the phenomena, study the series of incidents and understanding students’ views over it. After considering all these points, a report will be produced to SPPU V-C in less than 10-15 days,” Desai told Sakal Times.
