PUNE: The drying up of borewells and shortage of water motivated societies in Vishrantwadi to organise a session on Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) and water conservation at Vishrant Co-operative Housing Society, on Sunday.

Around 100 residents from Vishrant Co-operative Society and Vishrant Co-operative Society 1 attended the session where Col (retd) Shashikant Dalvi, a resident of Viman Nagar and an expert in Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) addressed the audience.

Vice Chairman of both Vishrant Co-operative Society and Vishrant Co-operative Society 1, Deepak Patil said, “Mostly in summer we are forced to order two to three water tankers daily due to shortage of water. There are 275 flats in Vishrant Society and 200 flats in Vishrant Society 1. We have a borewell, but the water in it is contaminated. Therefore, to get more information about water conservation and RWH, the session was organised.”

While speaking at the session, Col Dalvi said, “The serious issue of inadequate water will not be solved by just doing RWH, but water conservation is also important.”

He told the society residents, “The borewell water should be chemically analysed. Water aerators should be installed in every household. Vehicles should not be washed daily. Water for bathing should be controlled. Domestic helpers should be made aware of the seriousness of water wastage.”

Patil said, “We will start implementing all the stated possibilities to save water. In a month the report of how much water has been saved by applying saving methods, will be submitted to Dalvi.”

Col Dalvi added, “Once the society learns to save the water, then the RWH will be implemented.”
