Pune: Despite fighting a long battle to resolve the garbage issue, the residents of Wagholi finally found solace after a private firm Vivam Solid Waste Management Private Limited, in association with Wagholi Gram Panchayat (GP), started a processing plant. 

The plant gets 15 tonnes of mixed garbage and makes compost out of it.
 
While speaking at a press conference, Neha Kandalgaonkar, Director of the venture, said, “Wagholi daily generates 30 to 35 tonnes of mixed garbage from which we process 15 tonnes. All the mixed garbage is processed in a single machine from which plastic, wet and dry waste is segregated automatically.

Compost is produced out of the wet and dry waste, while granules are made from plastic waste. The compost is sold to the nearby farmers and the granules are sold to the industries.” 

“We are associated with 125 municipal councils, six municipal corporations and 50 gram panchayats, which includes Pune Municipal Corporation, Wagholi Gram Panchayat and Nere Gram Panchayat,” she added.
 
She said they have developed a scientific method for vermicomposting called ‘Swarup Vermicomposting System’, which been approved by the Agriculture Department of Government of India and Maharashtra. The State Government has also approved subsidy of its vermicomposting technology for farmers, she said.
