Pune: Following the good monsoon spell in last one week, the water level in four dams supplying water to Pune rose by 0.51 thousand million cubic feet (TMC). According to the State Irrigation Department, water level in the four dams namely, Varasgaon, Temghar, Khadakwasla and Panshet reached 2.98 TMC, although it is less by 0.60 TMC compared to same day last year. 

According to the Irrigation Department, the catchment area of the four dams received 169 mm rainfall on Sunday with Temghar dam catchment area recording maximum 73 mm of rainfall, followed by Varasgaon (45 mm), Panshet (43 mm) and Khadakwasla (8 mm).

Following the drought situation in the district and delayed monsoon, there was stress on water usage in the city and now the situation seems to be improving. 

Similarly, the Pavana dam, which supplies drinking water to Pimpri Chinchwad received 41 mm rainfall on Sunday. Water stock in the dam was measured at 1.28 TMC. 

The State Irrigation Department said heavy showers will help increase the water level. Stocks in six dams of Bhima basin are still at zero per cent while storage in another ten dams is below 10% of  capacity. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) draws about 1.4 TMC water every month and about 16 TMC in a year. The Irrigation Department has urged the civic administration to draw about 1.2 TMC water per month.
