India's new prodigy: Ayush Shetty’s meteoric rise in Asian Badminton Championship

Ranked world number 25, the 20-year-old defeated three top-10 players, including World No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn, before losing a close final to China’s Shi Yuqi.

India has found its next generational talent in the most dramatic fashion. While the rest of the Indian contingent made early exits from the 2026 Asian Badminton Championships, 20-year-old Ayush Shetty was busy dismantling the world’s elite.

The world number 25’s run was so deep that he famously found himself stranded in Ningbo without a return flight, a minor logistical hiccup for a man who clinicaly dispatched the world’s top-ranked players. Despite a straight-sets loss in the final to China’s Shi Yuqi, Shetty’s silver-medal finish has revived the sagging hopes of Indian badminton fans and drawn comparisons to a young Viktor Axelsen.

Path of destruction: Three top-10 scalps

Shetty’s path to the podium showcased a relentless, offensive brand of badminton. At a commanding height of 6'4", the young player exploited his long reach and sharp, downward shots to overpower seasoned opponents.

  • Round 1: Defeated WR #7 Li Shifeng (China).

  • Quarter-finals: Toppled WR #4 and former Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie (Indonesia).

  • Semi-finals: Overcame WR #1 and Olympic silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn (Thailand) in what he described as the "toughest match" of his career.

Shi didn’t give me a chance to attack. He didn’t let me dominate at the net, and I couldn’t create any attacking opportunities. Once he found his rhythm, he started playing some really sharp shots. The loss to Shi Yuqi is quite a learning experience.

Following the final, an introspective Shetty shared his thoughts on his breakthrough week and the "viral" moments that defined it.

I learned that I need to keep trusting the process and believing in myself — that was the most important part. I always wanted to be one of the best in the world. It was my dream, and it still is. Back then, I maybe didn’t believe it as much as I do now

I also have a viral shot now (laughs). It was a simple block at the net, but it changed the momentum of the match [vs Li Shifeng]. I had just lifted the shuttle, and instinctively stuck the racquet out. I’d never done a block like that before. I was so happy after that, but never expected it to go viral.

Generational hype: Sindhu and Axelsen

The badminton world has taken notice. PV Sindhu, who has sparred with Shetty at the Prakash Padukone Academy, was unequivocal in her praise:

I have consistently maintained that he is a generational talent. In terms of pure natural ability, he stands right up there with the very best young players I have come across. There is a prodigious level of talent in him

Shetty’s idol, Viktor Axelsen, even remarked that the Indian reminds him of his younger self.

It makes you feel great when your idol says good things about you," Shetty noted. "Viktor is really strong, and he gets really low to the ground... This is something I picked up on and want to do if I want to be among the very best.

Road ahead

  • Ningbo stranded: Shetty was the only Indian left in the competition by Sunday, leading to his return flight complications.

  • Celebrity cheers: The 20-year-old received personal messages of encouragement from Bollywood stars Anil Kapoor and Suniel Shetty.

  • Irwansyah factor: Shetty has only been training with coach Irwansyah for two weeks, yet the coach’s tactical inputs were credited for the win over Christie.

  • Primary focus: "The World Championships is my primary focus now and then the Asian Games."
