IPL 2020: Anushka Sharma responds to Sunil Gavaskar’s controversial remark

Sakal Times News Desk

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who is a mainstay in the commentary box for BCCI, is on the receiving end of fans’ anger because of a statement he made while commentating in the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) game.

Virat Kohli, who had an off-day on the field, dropped the centurion KL Rahul twice. After being dropped, Rahul went on to score 42 runs off nine balls after Kohli dropping him.

Inhone lockdown me bas Anushka ki gendi ko practice ki hai (During the lockdown, Kohli just practiced against Anushka's deliveries),” remarked Sunil Gavaskar on air, supposedly referring to a video the couple had uploaded during the lockdown period caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The statement did not go down well with the fans of the game as they took to Twitter to slam Gavaskar.

The Twitter reactions ranged from extreme disgust to calling out the sexism in society. Many fans even asked BCCI to remove the veteran from the commentary panel. Anushka on Friday came up with a reply for the former cricketer.

That, Mr Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her for her husband’s game?

“I am sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commentating on the game. Don’t you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us? I am sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or are your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?

“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements? Respected Mr Gavaskar, you are a legend whose names stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this,” Anushka Sharma wrote in her Instagram story.
